We commonly associate intelligence with the brain—and rightly so. The brain is the extraordinary organ that enables thought, memory, learning, perception, decision-making, and consciousness. But the brain does not create its energy from nothing. Its ability to function depends upon the nutrients and energy that enter our bodies through what we eat and drink. Under normal conditions, glucose is the brain’s principal energy substrate, while during prolonged fasting the body can adapt by supplying the brain with alternative fuels, including ketone bodies. This connection becomes particularly evident when food is severely restricted. Research using brain imaging has shown that even relatively short periods of fasting can alter patterns of brain activation, although the effects of fasting on cognition are not uniform and depend on the duration and circumstances. In prolonged starvation, the consequences can become far more serious as the body’s ability to supply the brain and other organs is progressively challenged. In this sense, intelligence may be expressed in the brain, but the biological foundation that sustains that intelligence begins much earlier—at the mouth. What enters the mouth becomes part of the biological system that ultimately supplies the brain.
